Worship Entertainment

Admittedly, I am a church critic.  I know its wrong, and I am working on it.  My area of biggest criticism is worship.  I love to worship God. But, I'm not really sure of how I'm getting there.

It seems that many contemporary churches are beginning to blur the lines between worship and entertainment. For our purposes, we will define worship as the act of leading people into there individual experience with God. Let us define entertainment as a performance to be enjoyed and participated in by an audience.

We see that worship is God based.  Entertainment is human based.

I remember a time when churches didn't have a worship "team", but a song leader.  The song leader was someone in the church (who desired to serve the church), who picked out the songs to be sung, and actually lead the congregation in singing.   Sometimes, the song leader was good, more often than not, just capable.  But, it didn't really matter.  Nobody was at church expecting a performance from the song leader, nobody expected to be entertained. We went to church and sang the songs that we were lead in, for no other reason than praise and worship.  That's the worship that I remember.

The picture we have now is much different.  We have a team of people, the team is chosen based on their musical talents.  We go to church expecting some great music, when our expectations are not met, we are disappointed.  The worship leader/team (in conjunction with the lights, effects, and monitor ear pieces) behave on stage (formerly known as a platform), not as if they were leading a congregation into the presence of God, but as if we are all there to watch them sing.

The greatest worship experiences I have faced have been those times without the stage/platform, no special equipment, just a dude with a guitar.

I don't get up for church on a Sunday morning, to be sang to, or watch a stage show.  I don't go to church to see people that couldn't make it big as a musician, so they take their weekly 15 minutes of fame on the church stage/platform.  I get up for church on Sunday morning, to come face to face with God, a culmination daily spending time in His presence.

I am not opposed to either form of worship. I'm just a church critic, wondering where the line between entertainment and worship is at.

It would serve every parishoner well, to remember that worship is about God.  Worship starts in the Heavens, and spreads to us, worship is our opportunity to join with the heavens and earth in praise and adoration to our Creator.

Dead Spirituality

"I know your works; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead." -Revelation 3:1 (HCSB)

Today we have more access to the greatest preachers, Bible scholars, study guides, worship music, and ministry tools than ever before, yet many churches are a reflection of the church in Sardis (Revelation 3).

Dead.

Before our nation can experience spiritual revival and renewal, our communities must be revived, before or communities can be revived, our churches must be revived, and our churches will only be revived when individuals experience revival.

The first steps toward spiritual revival are to realize what is leading, or has lead, to our spiritual death.

Why are we dead?

I think of Samson, he had made a vow of separation to God.  Yet, he repeatedly breaks the conditions of that vow.  Samson, mighty and strong, loses it all with his head in the lap of Delilah.  The main factor in spiritual death is, like Samson, failure to maintain separation from the world; failing to be in the world, but not, of it.  We start slipping to become, of the world, but not, in Christ.

We lack spiritual revival due to selfish PRIDE.

We must remember that the one mission of the church (and us, as Christians) is the salvation of souls. It is not about us.  It is not about what we look like, our social status, economic status, or position we serve in.

Many who are involved in the work of the church let themselves become more enamored with their performance and position, than with sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

GREED for gain is a strong factor in the dragging down of our spiritual lives.

It is easy to get caught up in this striving for monetary gain, and the wealth of the world.  Every where we look we are blasted with messages of materialism.  It serves us well to remember that all we have has been given by God.  We are merely stewards.  The Old Testament instituted a 10% tithe.  However, if you read through the New Testament there is no mention of a standard tithing amount.  The New Testament believers, "gave to anyone as he had need"; this giving mentality exceeds, by far, the 10% "standard".

An ever-increasing hindrance to spiritual revival is the growing IGNORANCE of God's Word.

Too many congregations are full of people who merely do their "church" duty on Sundays.  They have been in church their whole lives, yet know nothing of the Word of God.  To experience revival it is imperative that we spend time daily in His Word.  We spend time reading, studying, and praying the Bible.  God's Word is the sword by which we can defeat those spiritual enemies that hinder spiritual renewal, and it is only by wielding this sword regularly that we are strengthened enough to defeat these enemies.

The final hindrance we will discuss is the absence of PRAYER.

Everything rises and falls on our prayer life.  Weak prayer life = weak Christian.  Strong prayer life = revived Christian.  Prayer is our connection to the Source.  Prayer is what affords us the opportunity to connect with the Restorer, the Renewer, the Reviver, Jesus Christ.  Without this constant connection we lose all spiritual power, and become dead.

In generations past, trolley cars were a main source of transportation through metropolitan areas.  These trolley cars were connected to a power cable.  Occasionally, one of these cars would "jump the line", and all would go black and dead.  So it is, with our prayer life.

If we desire to see revival in our land, we must first be individually, in our own hearts, be revived.

"Connect with God's Holy Spirit by prayer, and the power-house of Heaven will send down the power.  God help the church, pulpit and pew to rise from the dead, and be endued with the power." -Len Gaston Broughton

Doing Virtuous Business, by Thomas Roosevelt Malloch

Thomas Roosevelt Malloch, CEO of the Roosevelt Group and head of the Spiritual Capital Initiative at Yale University, presents an excellent argument for conduction virtues based business in his book, Doing Virtuous Business.

He opens with a discussion on spiritual capital.  Showing what exactly spiritual capital is and why it matters.  Then he sets out to define 'virtue', through Aristotle, the Greeks, and Christendom.

Available at http://tinyurl.com/3dwwvjg
The remaining chapters of the book delve into the practical aspects of doing virtuous business.  The virtues of leadership, courage, patience, perseverance, discipline, justice, forgiveness, compassion, humility, and gratitude and how the shape the soul of a corporation are covered in depth.  The book hinges on Aristotle's "cardinal virtues" of temperance, courage, justice, practical wisdom, and the fact that without these no other virtues can be reliably acquired or exercised.

Malloch does not solely focus on Christianity as the only way to virtue, but other faith groups as well.  He conservatively utilizes today's big companies as practical examples (both good, and bad).  An appendix is provided, which outlines companies that are successful because the refuse to do anything other than virtuous business.

This should be required reading for anyone desiring to start, build, or maintain a successful company based on being virtuous.

"Jungle Warfare: A Basic Field Manual for Christians in Sales", By Christopher Cunningham

I received this book a while ago, and inadvertently neglected to post my review, so here it is.

Not a huge fan of devotional books, but I was looking for tools that would speak to professionals in the business world. Jungle Warfare does a great job of applying jungle warfare tactics to spiritual warfare principles. This book seems as though it would have great relevance to sales professionals (myself, not being in sales).

This book avoids getting into any great depth or detail, but uniquely addresses all the basics. I would recommend this book, by Christopher Cunningham, be read in conjunction with other Bible study resources.

Sacred Unions, Sacred Passions

This book is past due! For far too long the church has stigmatized cross-sex friendships. They have created this fear, or thought process, that any male/female relationship has to end in sex, or be sexually charged. As we see from Dan Brennan's Sacred Unions, Sacred Passions, this does not have to be the case. We don't have to live in fear of the opposite sex!

Brennan reveals that male/female relationships are not only possible, but healthy. He uses the stories of Jesus, and His relationship with women (as seen from scripture) to make his point.

Brennan addresses seven issues regarding cross-sex friendships:

  • Sacred Sexuality and Friendship

  • Romantic Myth and Friendship

  • Sacred Order and Friendship

  • Sacred Unions and Friendship

  • Sacred Passions and Friendship

  • Sacred Bodies and Friendship

  • Sexual Shalom and Friendship

This book is full of valuable information. The reader can definitely tell that the author has done extensive research on the subject. The material contained within these pages is priceless. This book is a must have for pastors, those who have been raised in the legalistic church, and those desiring deeper and more meaningful relationships. If nothing else, this book will open up your mind to new perspectives of cross-sex friendships!

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galations 3:28

The Gospel of John is such a powerful book of the Bible. It is the most recommended book to be read by new believers, the reason, John gives us the most complete glimpse of who Christ really is, His Divinity and His humanity.

2. Healing of noblemans son (4:46-54)
3. Healing of impotent man (5:1-9)
4. Feeding of the 5,000 (6:1-14)
5. Walking on the water (6:15-21)
6. Healing of blind man (9:1-41)

7 "I am..." Statements (made by Christ, of who Christ is)

1. "...the bread of life..." (6:35,48)
2. "...the light of the world..." (8:12; 9:5)

Numb

It's been said that smoke is God's gift to man. Smoke is the by-product of incomplete combustion. In the event of fire, the victim succumbs to smoke long before the heat ever reaches his body, the victim is spared the searing pain of burning flesh.

When people experience some extenuating circumstance, something which causes great pain (death, disaster, divorce, etc.), they will often describe a feeling of being "numb". Perhaps this "numb" feeling is God's gift to us.

If it were not for this numb-ness that we experience, the pain would be too great. We would be overwhelmingly crippled, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Perhaps, it is in God's plan to use these periods of feeling numb to initiate healing, and to restore our strength.

Free Book, Brian Tome

Discover what freedom in Christ really is!

This is the topic of Brian Tome's latest book, Free Book. People everywhere are in bondage. In bondage to religion, rules, risks, and fear. God wants us to be free, free to experience life, free to take risks, free to pursue our passions. Tome outlines how this can be accomplished, and defines what freedom really is, and what this freedom looks like.

In the chapter entitled, "Live It Out", he states the key ingredient in marriage is to be married to one that focuses on your freedom. I find that this is true of any relationship. We want to be with, and feed off, those who want us to experience freedom, and who encourage, and enable that to happen.

I recommend this book to any who are in bondage, who have a false idea of life in Christ, and those who desire to be free!

Synergize-d

I just returned from 3 days in Orlando, attending the Synergize2! conference. There were more than 16 pastors/leaders from across the world, that shared what God was doing. It was a time of refreshing, renewal, and a fresh anointing. It was like a breath of fresh air, to hear that God is moving in other countries across the world. Millions are giving their life to Christ every day! The gospel is being taken to the "uttermost parts of the earth".

In the coming weeks, I will be posting different notes and thoughts from some of the features speakers.

Haiti -- End or Beginning?

The below post is from a Facebook note written by Gerald Bustin (click here to be taken to the Facebook note page). It is very powerful, because it is so true.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IS THIS THE END OF HAITI OR A BEGINNING? Gerald Bustin

I am really, really angry—so angry I could scream!

Yesterday, two different people who called me for news about Haiti and the victims of the earthquake fell back into the standard default mode of so called “Christians,” with their stupid, buck-passing cliche’: “Well we know this is what we expect in these last days!”

To be fair, they may not have meant it the way I took it, but since actions speak louder than words, this seems to be the way most Christians mean it— “O well, God said it would happen so there’s nothing we can do about it.” That sort of blathering stupidity is what is making me angry.

For too long we have believed the devil-inspired doctrines of John Darby and have allowed the church to lose our purpose, power, and destiny. (He claimed the church was just a parenthesis in God’s calendar and was never meant to conquer or win the world but was destined to be taken out so God could come back to His original plan—Israel.) Since then the church has believed it’s mission in life is to evacuate, not conquer! Of course we are in the “last days,” but remember, the last days started with Jesus Christ! The last days did not prevent the early church from changing their known world! The last days did not prevent John Wesley from changing the face of England. The last days did not prevent Whitefield and Edwards and others from being used of God in laying the foundation in revival for the birth and formation of the United States of America! The last days did not prevent William Carey from becoming the “Father of modern missions.” And it did not keep my father and five of his children from going into stone-age New Guinea and helping to change the destiny of that nation!

So now with maybe 100,000 dead, many lying in the streets, and probably most buried beneath the rubble in Haiti, what is our real vision for the church’s response? The world is rushing to bring in water, food, medical attention and shelter, and that is urgently needed at this time. But as important and needed as it is, this kind of assistance is little more than a proverbial “band-aid” and is only a short-term solution. We can join the rush to get more “band-aids” or we can look through the eyes of faith and see this as a potential NEW BEGINNING FOR HAITI then act accordingly!

We can cry over the terrible suffering (and we should) or, while weeping, we can pick up the “Balm in Gilead” and go forward in His Name to bring healing to a nation— Healing to a nation that sold it’s soul to the devil more than 200 years ago and has been living under a curse ever since! Healing to a nation that has lived in squalor and poverty, and starvation and disease and corruption for 200 years while being the “Voodoo Capital of the World.” Healing to a nation that shares the very same Island of Hispaniola with a neighbor (Dominican Republic) which is rich compared with Haiti.

I went to Haiti as a very small boy with my family 65 years ago—1945. Across the years since then, many missionaries including my mother and sister-in-law, have laid down their lives there. Millions of dollars have been poured into Haiti during these years. Today Haiti is really no better off than it was then. According to reports, The USA has given more than three billion dollars in aid to Haiti since 1992. But Haiti really has nothing to show for that money! Haiti has gone from once being the richest French colony - the Pearl of the Antilles - to being the poorest nation in the western hemisphere! Today it has been stripped of its resources: 98% of the national territory has been deforested, increasing the vulnerability of a population impoverished by years of dictatorship and violence. And now as Haiti reels from the devastation of a powerful earthquake, it seems it’s plight could not possibly be any worse!

And as the world rushes in with “band-aids” the Church of Jesus Christ needs to speak with the faith and power of Peter and John, “Silver and gold we don’t have, but. . . In the name of Jesus Christ rise up and live!” So how do we make this the Beginning of a new Haiti? By raising up an “army” of people filled with the love and faith of Jesus who will go in and weep with them— but not in despair or desolation— but with faith and hope that there is a better day coming. By helping them rise up and break the curse by denouncing the devil and all his ways. By lifting the Name of Jesus and speaking the power of that Name over the land! By establishing the Lordship of Jesus Christ over Haiti.

Of course it won’t hurt to have some “band-aids” in our pockets as well to share, but “band-aids” is not our business! Our Business is Asserting the Healing and Transforming Power of Jesus Christ and speaking with one united voice with the authority that is ours to cast out the devil!

Back to me being Angry: Why? I am tired of Christians living with an artificial ceiling above our heads placed there by an end-time doctrine of doom and gloom rather than a vision of victory! I am tired of having to beg wealthy Christians for a few crumbs from their over-loaded tables so I can share those crumbs with a starving world! I am tired of selfish “Christians” who have no greater motivation than SELF and in that sense are no different from the world! (Some even think they are more holy because of the clothes they wear and even this self-righteousness is just more bloated self!) I am tired of so-called Christians who are content to chase little white balls around green fields in Florida since they have enough money to “retire” on while much of the world is headed for hell but they couldn’t be bothered! I am tired of “successful” business men with bulging pockets, acting like I am being painfully unreasonable to suggest they should share some of their time and money with others whose pockets are empty! (And by the way—if they don’t give it willingly the government cometh to take-eth it away.) I am tired of so-called Christians looking the other way (because, remember it is not our purpose to win) while we lose our privileges and freedoms to pray and read our Bibles in public places and while the Name of Jesus is forbidden at the close of our public prayers! I am tired of allowing 50 million of our babies to be murdered under the name of legal abortions and allowing militant homosexuals to define the meaning of marriage! I am tired of Christians voting again and again for the same corrupt politicians who use the power we give them to sneer and snarl at our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! And I am REALLY SICK AND TIRED of being told that this is the way it has to be because God declared it should be this way in these “Last Days.” And I’m really, really, really tired of you Face Book readers who don’t have enough passion in your hearts and fire in your bellies to get off your soft sofas and start doing something about it!

Stuff Christians Like

The below post is taken from the blog, Stuff Christians Like, it is entitled "Acting Surprised When God Doesn't Seem Close". I encourage you to add this blog to your RSS feed, it is always full of interesting posts.

_________________________________________________________________

“Are you OK?”

That’s my wife’s polite way of saying, “Why are you being such a distant, distracted jerk right now?”

She said that to me about a week ago and she was right. I was distant. I was distracted. I was a jerk. Above all, I was surprised.

When I hit funks like this, I like to act shocked. I put my hands on my head and say in quiet wonder, “What is going on? Where is God? How come this Christmas season feels so awkward and scattered and ill fitting? What’s going on God, what are you doing?”

It’s better that way. The blame isn’t on me. No one likes to throw themselves under the bus. That would be bananas. But I have no problem acting surprised when God feels far away. If I was honest though, if I really looked at the last few weeks with a filter of truth, I probably would have instead said something like this:

“Wow, my quiet times have been wildly inconsistent this holiday season. I mean I often struggle with them during vacations because my normal patterns are all jumbled up but I reached new lows this Christmas. I’m not starting my days with God right now. I’m not praying actively like I usually do. I’m not centering my mornings and my days on who he is and who he made me to be. It’s been a week since I’ve cracked my Bible and in it’s absence I’ve been filling my head and heart with junk. I’ve been watching shows on Hulu that I never watch. I’ve been aimlessly surfing online which is usually a deathtrap for me. I’ve been nudging my boundaries all over the place. I’ve been reading and listening to things I usually avoid. Hmmm, I wonder if any of that will have a consequence?”

It does. It might take me a while to realize what I’m doing but when I finally come around it seems so obvious. When I remove quiet time and add junk, things get gross, fast. How am I surprised? How am I shocked that my decisions get shady? How am I perplexed that it’s suddenly a little easier to lie and twist the truth?

I don’t know if you ever do this, but I’m exhausted by it. I don’t like whimpering out of 2009 spiritually but even more so, I don’t like limping into 2010.

Let’s put aside our surprise. Let’s stop pretending. Faith is a day by day, decision by decision, breath by breath kind of thing. And when we spend those days indulging in poison, we get poisonous lives.

The cat is out of the bag. Farewell surprise.
